Hundreds to gather in Kelvingrove Park to demand better lighting to keep public safe

Hundreds are expected to gather in Glasgow's Kelvingrove Park tonight, calling for better lighting in public parks to improve safety.

Demonstrators will gather in the west end park at 6pm this evening as part of a campaign to improve safety at night in public spaces.

The #LightTheWay protest, organised by Radio Clyde, will begin at the Stewart Memorial Fountain and is designed to put the spotlight on safety fears for women and groups.

Hosted by Clyde 1’s Cassi, the event will have a range of speakers including Natalie Crawford-Goodwin from the #LightTheWay campaign, with additional speakers to be announced closer to the date.

Last month, Nicola Sturgeon acknowledged "concerns" around women being forced to walk through dark areas during COP26, with parts of the city cordoned off for the summit.

Glasgow City Council has committed to look into providing sensitive lighting solutions in parks, which consider both equality and climate impacts.

#LightTheWay spokesperson Natalie Crawford, said: “Friday 10th December, the day of the demonstration is the last day in the UN’s 16 days of action against gender-based violence so it is really appropriate to bring together #IWalkWithWomen and #LightTheWay.

“We can - and must - do more to protect women across Glasgow and we have already seen that action can be taken when there is political will.

“This demonstration will ensure that decision-makers know that we will not stay silent and that women’s, and all Glaswegian’s, safety at night should be a top priority.

“We are anticipating a good turnout which will reflect the strength of feeling about the campaign- we must protect women better.”
