Hundreds of Rimrose campaigners sing: 'you can shove your dirty highway'

Hundreds gathered at Rimrose Valley Country Park today in protest against the plans to transform the park into a dual carriageway.

The park, based in South Sefton, has proved popular amongst locals for generations and provides a much needed green space for the area.

After an hour of speeches from local MPs and councillors, the protest turned into a march, going from the park to the entrance of the Port of Liverpool in a bid to stop Peel Port from backing the plans that would see the transformation of the much loved park.

The march, that seemed to pick more people up as it went, was enjoyed by those involved whilst passing on an important message - that people of South Sefton want a park, not a carriageway.

Chants were heard up and down the queue of people making their way to the port entrance, with people chanting "no roads no way, Peel Port go away" and "I don't know what I've been told, we don't want your Rimrose road".

Angered people were also heard chanting "you can shove your dirty highway up your a**".

During the march, dozens of cars beeped and waved in support of the march, despite the build up of traffic, proving what the people of South Sefton really think about these plans whether they were protesting or not.

When the group got to the entrance, a local family handed over a letter demanding Peel Port's CEO, Mark Whitworth, pulls their support for the plans and admits that it's "not an answer" to their problems.

Campaigner and organiser, Stuart Bennett, told the crowd: "All we're asking for is that Peel Port withdraw their support for this destructive road proposal and acknowledge that a road is not an answer to a problem that they're creating.

"We want them to work positively with Sefton Council and the department of Transport to look at long term sustainable solutions for the movement of freight which respect out health and wellbeing and respect the environment.

"We want them to engage with local communities through the establishment of a forum with other community groups and resident associations to address the ongoing impact of the port operations including air, noise and light pollution from HGVs and ships that they're responsible for."

The letter was handed over to a representative with the assurance that the letter will reach Mr Whitworth directly.

People of all ages were encouraged to join the protest, with Mr Bennett even admitting before the march that more people had turned up than expected.

Police used rolling road blocks allowing protesters to walk safely on the roads with paramedics on standby as well.
