Hundreds queue for Nottingham's first Retro Games Fair

From Sonic the Hedgehog to Streets of Rage - hundreds of people walked down memory lane at Nottingham's first Retro Games Fair.

Gamers got the chance to play vintage games on consoles such as the Atari, Nintendo and Sega Mega Drive at the Britannia Hotel on Saturday, October 5.

Dozens of stalls also aligned the conference centre where excited adults, and their children, got to rummage through trays of old games looking for that old classic to buy.

Everything from Lemmings, Paper Boy, Home Alone, Terminator 2, Wrestlemania and Cool Spot were on sale from £10, with rare finds such as Nintendo's A Nightmare on Elm Street fetching £75.

There was also the chance to buy old consoles including the Gameboy, memorabilia such as a Mario door mat and a raffle to win a new Mega Drive with in-built games.

Matt Farrell, event organiser, said he had many "sleepless nights" leading up to the event.

He was worried Nottingham people might not get behind the idea, but he was proven wrong when hundreds of people queued from 11am this morning.

He said: "We were nervous about it because setting up an event like this and not knowing if you are going to get people interested or if there is a need for it.

"I am a Nottingham boy. I have been in the industry for 20 years and love video games. People love retro and nostalgia. I have been overwhelmed. We have had queues of people.

"I can't see why it would not come back next year or we have more than one."

Georgina Edge, 40, from The Meadows, who attended the event with her 11 year old son, said: "I really like looking at the old games. I have a Gameboy and he has a Nintendo DS.

"Since the geek revolution more people are getting involved and retro is becoming more popular. We don't have to hide in the shadows any more."

Marc Holiday, 46, of Bramcote, attended the event with his wife and two children.

He said: "It is a lot busier than I expected, with lots of stuff to buy. I grew up with this stuff. It is the first time I have seen something like this in Nottingham."

The event finishes at 4pm today.
