Hundreds protest against murder of woman who had her body parts flushed down toilet

Hundreds of people have taken part in a protest against the horrific murder of a woman whose body parts were reportedly flushed down a toilet.

Ingrid Escamilla Vargas, 25, was stabbed to death and dismembered in a murder that sent shock-waves across Mexico.

Her 46-year-old partner Erik Francisco Robledo has admitted killing her in an apartment in the municipality of Gustavo A. Madero in Mexico City, after they had an argument.

Graphic images of her corpse were leaked by forensic offices and a local newspaper La Prensa has been slammed for publishing one of the photographs on its front page.

The protesters, which were predominately women, were demonstrating on Friday against an increase in gender-based killing in Mexico, BBC News reports.

Last year there was a record high pf 3,825 women killed in Mexico and police are investigating more than 700 cases of femicide in the country, but activists claim the number is higher.

They were also holding placards calling for "responsible journalism".

The protest began outside National Palace, where President Andrés Manuel López Obrador lives with his family, and moved through the capital to the offices on La Prensa.

The paper had published the gruesome image with the headline "It was cupid's fault".

Protesters tried to enter the newspaper's building but was blocked by security forces resulting in a clash.

A vehicle belonging to the newspaper was sent on fire during the demonstration.

La Prensa said it stood by its decision but was happy to discuss options of altering its editorial standards beyond Mexican law.

President López Obrador had previously accused media outlets of "manipulating" the issue surrounding femicide.

But as protesters gathered outside his home he said he was "not burying [his] head in the sand.

He added: "The government I represent will always take care of ensuring the safety of women.".

After Robledo admitted killing Ingrid he said he dismembered her body "as he did not want anyone to know".
