Hundreds pay tribute to young man with 'amazing attitude' who died after tough battle

Tributes have poured in for a young man who tragically died after a long battle with cancer.

Chris Carberry is described as having an "amazing attitude" towards his fight with the devastating illness before his death on Thursday.

The 24-year-old, from St Helens, was described as an "inspiration to others" as hundreds paid tribute to him on his Facebook.

Chris' family announced his death on the page, The Next Step For Chris, which the former brick layer and keen golfer had been using to document his journey with cancer.

They said: "Today Chris' fight ended as he died peacefully earlier today in Willowbrook Hospice.

"Each and every one of you meant so much to him and we hope he inspired you as much as he did us - to face your fears and your demons like the strong lion he was.

"Chris' mantra throughout his four and a half year dance-off with cancer was to stick two fingers up and say F**K IT and he carried this mentality with him to the very end.

"Please feel free to use this page to share with us your favourite memories of Chris and post any pictures of him you may have.

"For all the love and support you have shown over the years, thank you."

Among the hundreds of comments, people shared their memories of Chris and sent supportive messages to his family.

Olivia Parr said: "Lost for words.

"Feel honoured to have been in the presence of such an inspiration to many.

"Thank you for all the opportunities you gave me Chris. Your legacy will live on forever."

Denise Wilkinson also said: "So devastated to hear this.

"Such a positive, inspirational, brave, funny, courageous, happy guy.

"So honoured to have met him.

"May he rest in peace and may his family feel some comfort in what he brought to others.

"RIP young man. Bless you for all you have done. Sincere condolences to all the family."

Kathy Foster added: "Rest peacefully young man, taken too soon.

"You have been a source of strength and inspiration to me in supporting my daughter through her Osteosarcoma fight.

"Love and thoughts to your family and friends you will be missed very much."

Chris' cancer was discovered four years ago after he had suffered with leg pain for months.

The golfer assumed it was just another sporting injury but as he stepped off a curb one day at work outside a house he was working on, his leg gave way and he fell over in “excruciating pain”.

He said staff at a walk-in centre initially told him to go home and come back if still in pain a week later, but as he deteriorated he came back and was sent for tests.

One scan revealed his thigh bone had broken, and weeks later he received the devastating news about the real cause - a bone cancer called osteosarcoma.

He began chemotherapy, but another scan months later appeared to suggest it was not working, and he was told amputating his leg was his best option.

A year later, as Chris continued to fight off the cancer he told the ECHO that he was "chucking the kitchen sink at my cancer and I’ll do anything I can to beat it'.

His amazing attitude astounded those around him as he attempted to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds to be able to undergo expensive treatment in America.

Many mentioned Chris' fight for life in their tributes to him.

John Hodkinson said: "Devastated doesn’t come close. Such a brave inspiration to all who knew him.

"His fight to continue to live life to the full made everyone who met him feel humbled.

"God bless Chris and sincere condolences to all his family and friends."

Mark Lyson added: "Absolutely gutted to hear this sad news.

"We got to know Chris when our daughter Hannah was also receiving treatment at Clatterbridge.

"He was a truly inspirational and lovely young man. Our heartfelt condolences to all the family."
