Hundreds pay final respects to brothers, 10 and 2, killed in 'road race' crash

Devastated family and friends have paid their final respects to two young brothers who were tragically killed in a horror 'road race' crash.

Sanjay Singh, 10, and his 23-month-old brother Pawanveer, were with their mother in her BMW when they were struck by an Audi S3 on Birmingham New Road, Wolverhampton, on March 14.

Both boys were pronounced dead at the scene while their mother was left seriously injured in hospital after what onlookers described as being caught up in a 'road race' between a high-powered Bentley and Audi.

Today, hundreds of tearful mourners gathered at the scene of the crash to pay tribute to the brothers during their funeral.

The funeral procession arrived at around 8am and was led by a white horse-drawn carriage carrying the coffins of Sanjay and Pawanweer, who lived in Dudley.

Balloons were also left at the scene to mark Pawanveer's second birthday.

One note left at the scene said: "I will never forget your beautiful face" while another said: "In loving memory of a beautiful young soul. You were too nice for this cruel world.

"RIP. Fly high baby boy."

A first aider at the scene told Mirror Online the BMW had been stopped at the lights as it waited to turn right into Lawnswood Avenue at around 8.45pm.

The driver of the Audi fled the scene on foot.

A 31-year-old man who was driving a Bentley at the time was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but was released pending further investigation.

A second driver was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and was also released pending further investigation.

A nearby resident reported at the time hearing the mother of the boys screaming 'my babies, my babies' after the crash.

Another resident said he believed the other two cars involved were "racing".

"I didn't see it but I heard it - two cars must have been racing. My son ran to the window and said 'they are racing dad' and then we heard an almighty bang," he told  The Sun .

The family paid tribute to the boys through a statement released by West Midlands Police.

They said: “Our family are grieving over the tragic deaths of our two beautiful children, as well as dealing with the shock of the horrific crash.

“At this time we would appreciate some privacy and space to grieve over our precious loss."

Claire Williams, headteacher at Cotwell End Primary School, also paid tribute to Sanjay, saying he was a "much loved pupil".

She told Birmingham Mail : "Sanjay was a lively and fun boy who was the life and soul of the class, it was an absolute privilege and joy to teach him at our school and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him."

A GoFundMe page has since been set up for the family of the two boys as well as a petition to stop street racing in the area.

Laura Baker, who set up both pages, told Mirror Online: "I would just like to urge people to help make a difference.

"The family are aware of the petition and are overwhelmed with the support. Me, Parveen and Tony set it up to turn this tragic accident into a positive change for Wolverhampton.

"The family are all agreed on this."
