Hundreds of Wigan homes lose power after car crash damages electricity network

More than 300 homes are without power after a car crash damaged a substation in Wigan.

The incident initially caused 1,866 properties to lose their electricity at around 6.50pm this afternoon but engineers quickly restored the majority of the supply.

A further 323 homes still have outages but Electricity North West, the company which manages the power supply, says it is working to repair the issue.

In a Tweet, a spokesman for the company said the problem had been caused after a car crash damaged electrical equipment.

Homeowners have been warned of a 'high volume' of calls reporting the problems.

In a statement, a spokesman for Electricity North West said: "Update on the Powercut in Wigan, we have now restored supplies to some of our customers, we are still working to get the remaining 323 customers back on supply as soon as we can, this will be done in stages.

"More updates to follow once they are available"

The crash is believed to have caused a fault within a high voltage cable.

The majority of the homes without power are around Beech Hill Avenue, just outside Wigan town centre.

Electricity North West says the power is expected to be completely restored by 9.30pm.
