Hundreds of Toyota Prius cars in Ireland recalled over fears seat belt reminder won't turn off

Toyata is recalling hundreds of its Prius cars in Ireland over fears their seat belt reminders won't turn off - even when fastened.

The car giant has issued the alert for vehicles of the model manufactured between December 2015 and January 2018.

The recall, which affects 781 vehicles on the Irish market, is being carried out due to a fault which could lead to the annoying beep not stopping.

A statement from the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission said: "There is a possibility that in the driver’s seat belt reminder system, due to an improper assembly of the electrical contacts in the reminder switch, abnormal wear at the contacts may occur after repeated use of the seat belt and residue may be deposited.

"In this condition, the seat belt reminder could not be turned off even when the seat belt is correctly fastened due to a short circuit between the contacts."

The company said it will contact owners directly to arrange for repairs to take place if necessary. Consumers can also contact the Toyota's customer care on 01-4190200.

Toyota has been contacted by the Irish Mirror for comment.
