Hundreds of thousands of people are without electricity across swathes of Queensland in an outage that may have been caused by a power station fire.
Authorities have confirmed a fire at the Callide Power Station near Biloela in central Queensland on Tuesday.
The Energy Market Operator says there's been a significant power system event, involving multiple transmission lines out of the Callide power station.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services confirmed the blaze, but gave no details about its severity.
Power companies Energex and Ergon are working to resolve the outage which has affected at least 375,000 customers in southeast Queensland alone, from the Gold Coast to Caboolture near the southern end of the Sunshine Coast.
A spokesman for the companies told AAP even more customers are believed to have been affected in regional parts of the state.
"I don't know how far it stretches," he said when asked about reports that customers all the way to far north Queensland had been hit.
"I know I've had calls from Maryborough, Oakey, out to behind Toowoomba as well as south east Queensland. We're working on it."
Chaos is expected on the roads as rush hour approaches.
Traffic authorities in metropolitan Brisbane tweeted a warning to drivers: "Traffic signals are not operating at numerous intersections throughout Brisbane and SE Queensland, Energex are working to restore power".
So far there's no disruption to metropolitan train services in Brisbane, but Gold Coast trams have been hit with services suspended from Broadbeach South to Cavill Avenue in Surfers Paradise.
Buses are being organised to pick up the slack.
