Hundreds of Swansea people once got married here, but it's now changed beyond recognition

It was the site of a former Swansea country club where hundreds of people once got married. The Pines Country Club was a hugely popular venue for generations and held many wedding receptions.

But since its closure over a decade ago, the site has remained dormant. The building had been demolished and some described the site as an eyesore.

But now things look completely different.

Llanelli -based construction company Morganstone has been hard at work for well over a year to create new life at the Treboeth site, building the vision of Coastal Housing, which was granted permission to create 28 residential properties on the land along with two retail units there.

And now the work is complete, with Jenkins bakery recently opening its doors to customers - the 27th shop in its chain ahead of its 100th anniversary next year.

Tesco is currently fitting out its soon to be opened store, and the houses are said to be in high demand.

One of the streets is even called Clos Calon Lan, commemorating poet and hymn writer Daniel James, who was born in the area and penned the famous Welsh song.

Managing director of Morganstone, Ian Morgan explained how it was a special project for him to be a part of having experienced the former Pines club himself as a child.

Mr Morgan said: "It is a bit personal for me, I used to go there as a kid and had some great nights out there when I was a youngster.

"It's been longer than we would have liked to get it done, probably around 14 or 15 months and we did have to shut down for two and a half to three months because of Covid.

"When we arrived the old Pines building had been demolished by the previous owner and there was just a lot of crushed material.

"It's a much needed development, especially with the Covid situation, there is not a lot of retail there and it means people can nip out locally. There are apartments above the commercial units. There's 12 houses and 15 flats.

"It's all done and all handed over to Coastal Housing. Tesco are currently there fitting out the new store, and Jenkins has already opened."

David Jenkins, commercial director at Jenkins Bakery added: “The new Treboeth shop is a great fit to add to our retail estate.

“We have great confidence in our product range and we are delighted to find that what we produce strikes a welcoming chord with our customers. Our roots as a company are in Llanelli, but we continue to expand where we see markets for our products.

“As a third-generation family business, we care passionately about what we do. We pride ourselves on being in touch with our customers and it is a hugely exciting time for us to be opening this new venture in Treboeth.

“Our company history dates back to 1921, but we don’t rest on our laurels here at Jenkins. We have a proud tradition and reputation as a company, but we always have one eye on the future – and this latest new shop represents an investment in the future.”
