Hundreds of streets in Trafford are facing missed green bin collections this week, due to ongoing staff shortages for the council’s bin team.
Contractors Amey PLC work in partnership with Trafford council to manage everything from bin collections, cleaning parks and resurfacing roads – but the services have been repeatedly slammed by residents and opposition councillors for years.
The ongoing saga dates back to 2015 when the then Conservative administration signed a huge 23 year contract with Amey to manage the borough’s infrastructure costing millions.

In 2018, Amey was fined £1m by Trafford council for submitting incorrect performance figures to the town hall.
Last year, Trafford council was at risk of failing to meet its statutory requirements regarding bin collections due to repeatedly failing service provision.
The authority chose to review its mega contract with Amey PLC and placed multiple ultimatums on the company to improve things for residents urgently.
The council ending up paying some residents financial compensation after they complained to the local authority ombudsman regarding the troubled services.
Last week, the current Labour administration was criticised by Conservative councillors for the ‘continued mismanagement’ of the service.
This week, residents are facing yet more missed bin collections – and it’s affecting all areas of the borough.
In a recent tweet, the OneTrafford partnership between Amey PLC and Trafford council issued an update of the streets likely to be affected.
It said: “With continued covid absences and national driver shortage, we’ve listed all streets we may not empty green bins from next week. Visit http://trafford.gov.uk/bin-disruptions. This may change, so keep visiting for updates.”
In a statement on its website, the council said: “We would like to thank residents for their patience during this difficult time.
“We are currently unable to collect some green bins on our daily rounds because of continued sickness and self-isolation of waste operatives and lorry drivers. With infection rates rising in the borough, we expect continued challenges to our green bin collection service.
“In addition, we are finding it difficult to bring in staff from agencies to cover for our staff due to shortages both locally, and nationally.
“The majority of Trafford residents are still receiving a green bin collection each week. Where a collection round is dropped one week, the service will not drop it the following week, to ensure residents are not going longer than 14 days between collections.”
