Hundreds of Specsavers jobs at risk as company suffers downturn during coronavirus pandemic

Around 450 jobs are at risk of redundancy at Specsavers because of a "sizeable downturn" in business as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The jobs, at the company's three support offices in Nottingham, Southampton and Guernsey, were announced by the firm on Tuesday, May 19.

It is yet unclear how many jobs will be affected within the Nottingham offices in Cirrus House, Experian Way, however the firm has announced that staff employed in its 900 UK stores are not affected by the announcement.

In total 433 people are employed at the Nottingham office.

Specsavers has confirmed to Nottinghamshire Live that up to 70 of its 546 employees in Guernsey are at risk from the cuts.

The remaining 380 jobs include support staff who work from home and people working from smaller offices in the UK, including Nottingham and Southampton, a spokesperson confirmed.

Specsavers says the potential redundancies will impact support office staff at all levels of seniority and span all business functions.

John Perkins, the company's chief executive, said: "We have done everything we possibly could to avoid making people redundant, including implementing salary cuts, the introduction of part-time working arrangements and utilising the government’s furlough scheme.

"My heart goes out to each and every one of our people who could lose their jobs.

"Like many other companies, we have, unfortunately, suffered a dramatic downturn in business because of the pandemic and, coupled with a challenging outlook for the economy, we sadly have had no option but to stop many of our major programmes, halt significant capital investment initiatives and carry out an exercise to streamline our organisational structure.

"Moving forward, our single-minded focus is on rebuilding the business to protect the interests of our joint venture partners and their store teams – giving them the opportunity to grow and thrive as they continue to best-serve our customers and local communities across the country."
