Hundreds of protesters take to Newcastle city centre in Reclaim the Streets demonstration

Hundreds of people took to the streets of Newcastle on Sunday as a huge demonstration made its way through the city.

Eyewitnesses said around 600 people turned out for the Reclaim the Streets demonstration on Sunday afternoon, despite a Northumbria Police warning on Saturday urging people to stay at home.

This footage captures the demonstration as protesters gathered at Monument before making their way along Grainger Street, Market Street, Percy Street and to Exhibition Park.

A number of speeches took place with speakers sharing their experiences of abuse.

The demonstration was largely peaceful though Northumbria Police confirmed that a small number of arrests had been made for breach of coronavirus restrictions.

At one point riot police entered the park but left soon after when it became clear that there was no prospect of trouble

Last weekend there were chaotic scenes in the capital after thousands of young women turned out to mark the tragic death of Sarah Everard at Clapham Common.

Plans for events in Newcastle and Durham were cancelled following police advice but this weekend there was a heavy police presence in Newcastle with demonstrations planned.

On Sunday a number of floral tributes dedicated to Ms Everard were laid at the foot of Grey's Monument.

By around 5pm the demonstration had come to a close with protesters beginning to leave Exhibition Park.

On Saturday police told people to stay at home on Anti-Racism Day with demonstrations largely taking place online.

A police statement issued on Saturday said: "Such public gatherings remain unlawful due to the risk they pose to public safety.

"We recognise the right to protest is extremely important but this right has always had to be balanced against the rights of the wider community.

"We would therefore urge people to take heed of the regulations and Public Health advice.

"Anyone thinking of visiting the city centre to take part in protest activity should reconsider."
