Hundreds of protesters gather in Newcastle city centre against Covid-19 restrictions

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Newcastle city centre to protest against the Government's coronavirus restrictions.

Members of the Stand Up X group gathered at Newcastle Civic Centre on Saturday afternoon.

The protest was made up of activists, members of the public and anti-vaxxers opposed to vaccinations.

Participants were seen holding up placards stating "Take your freedom back" and "I will not ever comply".

Meanwhile others read "I'm Tier Free" and "Scamdemic lies - No virus".

There was a heavy police presence in the vicinity with plenty of officers on foot and on horses called to the demonstration.

Stand Up X is a group that opposes Covid-19 vaccinations, lockdowns, social distancing, 5G technology as well as track and tracing.

A poster promoting the event said that it was "in remembrance to everything we have lost due to Covid and Covid restrictions. Instead of mourning we will celebrate and help those who are struggling, uniting with love, peace and music".

One speaker addressed the crowd: "In this moment in time we find ourselves in a situation where I believe that the way we're being treated is disproportionate to a threat."

The protest appeared to be peaceful, although pictures taken at the event showed people stood in close proximity with no face coverings.

The North East is currently subject to Tier 3 restrictions Covid-19 measures, meaning people must not socialise in a group of more than six in some other outdoor public spaces, including parks, beaches, countryside accessible to the public, a public garden, grounds of a heritage site or castle, or a sports facility.

The North East was plunged into Tier 3 following the second national lockdown in a bid to curb the rising number of coronavirus cases.
