Hundreds of people watch Gavin and Stacey's Nessa switch on Barry's Christmas lights

There were shouts of "oh," "cracking," and "what's occurin'?" ringing out in Barry as Gavin and Stacey's Ruth Jones switched on the town's Christmas lights .

Barry's very own Nessa Shanessa Jenkins was in the seaside town for the annual Christmas lights ceremony in King Square, Holton Road.

In full character, "Nessa" walked out shortly after 6pm on Saturday, November 23, shouting "oh, oh, oh".

The Stella actor received a great reaction from the Barry crowd - which is estimated to have been made up of more than 1,000 people - who responded with their own cheers of "oh".

She went on to ask: "What's occurin' - have you got nothing better to do?"

Ruth added: "Oh there's some lookers out here tonight.

"A few exes in the crowd, I can see. Alright, John, how's it going alright? Did you get over that nasty bout?"

Before the big switch on, Ruth said: "It says something about Barry doesn't it; that you're not at home watching something educational on the telly.

"You're just hanging out in the town square, getting drunk, making fools of yourselves."

"You makes me very proud," she added to roars of laughter from the crowd.

Nessa's appearance comes ahead of the hotly awaited Christmas special of the much-loved show which will air in the top spot on BBC One on Christmas Day.

Barry  has welcomed visitors from all over the world and is now receiving a fresh wave of interest after scenes from the  Christmas  special were filmed on location over the summer.
