Hundreds of people turn out for Black Lives Matter Newcastle protest - despite government warning

Hundreds of people turned out Newcastle's Black Lives Matter protest - despite government pleas to stay at home.

The protest, which was moved online due to social distancing rules, went ahead despite organisers attempting to move the event online on Saturday.

Eyewitnesses estimate around 200 people gathered following a march along Northumberland Street and a rally at Grey's Monument.

However, a separate event was taking place online and around 2,800 people were streaming speeches through a Facebook page.

Footage of the event shows protesters standing in close proximity.

Nationwide thousands of protesters turned out with huge gatherings in London and Glasgow still going ahead.

The events follow the killing of George Floyd, a black man who died while being arrested on suspicion of a minor offence.

In the US curfews have been imposed as Donald Trump threatened to send in the National Guard in a bid to put down civil disorder.

On Saturday a joint statement by Freedom from Torture and the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants called for action from the British government.

They said: “We are in solidarity with black people and the victims and survivors of state violence everywhere, including those exercising their democratic right to stand against it now.

“The structural and pervasive racism that led to the torture and murder of George Floyd under the knee of an American police officer is not unique to the United States.

“It is built into Britain’s public institutions, it exists in our immigration system and it is written into our history books. It lives and breathes in our society today.

“This is not just a ‘black issue’ or a ‘race issue’; the structures of oppression do not operate in a silo.

“It is not confined to one area of policy nor can it be attributed wholly to a single government. It is your problem and ours.”
