Hundreds of people join Black Lives Matter protest in Merthyr Tydfil

Hundreds of people took part in a Black Lives Matter demonstration in Merthyr Tydfil on Sunday as protests over the death of George Floyd continued across the world.

The protest took place outside The Redhouse in Penderyn Square and was one of many organised in Wales as part of the Black Lives Matter campaign.

The demonstration started at 2pm and attracted hundreds of people who generally followed social distancing rules by keeping to two metres apart and wore face coverings.

One man who attended the protest said: "There were a couple of hundred people there. The crowd was mostly younger people in their 20s and 30s but there were a few older people and people with children too."

There was also a minute's silence to remember Mr Floyd and other black people who have been killed by police officers with protesters kneeling in solidarity.

The Black Lives Matter is a movement that campaigns against violence and systemic racism against black people and has been running since 2013. The movement campaigns against police brutality and deaths of black Americans by police actions.

The most recent demonstrations organised by the group follow the death of George Floyd died in Minneapolis when a white police officer held him down by pressing a knee into his neck for more than eight minutes.

Protests have spread from America to cities across the world and similar events have taken place in Wales to support the Black Lives Matter campaign.

The first took place in Carmarthen on Saturday morning and around 2,000 people staged a protest near Cardiff city centre on Saturday.

Tensions only appeared when a local councillor was forced off a podium by angry organisers and booed by the crowd after declaring “All lives matter” – a slogan seen by many as a criticism of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Protests also took place in Swansea, Caerphilly and Bangor on Saturday and events have also been organised for Wrexham, Newport, and Barry.

In London thousands of protesters gathered in Parliament Square in Westminster on Saturday.
