Hundreds of people evacuated from Gateshead Civic Centre after fire breaks out in kitchen

Hundreds of people were evacuated from Gateshead Civic Centre after a fire broke out in a kitchen.

More than 1,000 staff and members of the public were forced to leave the building after a small fire broke out in the kitchen of Bewicks Restaurant on the ground floor.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service was called at 12.54pm on Friday and sent three crews to tackle the blaze.

Two crews from Gateshead and one crew from Newcastle Central arrived at the council headquarters at around 1pm to find that the fire had already been put out.

A spokesperson from Tyne and Wear Fire Rescue Service said: "We received a call at 12.54pm and sent two crews from Gateshead and one from Newcastle central.

"When they arrived at Gateshead Civic Centre the fire was already out and no-one was hurt."
