This is why hundreds of people were praying in Nottingham's Old Market Square last night

Hundreds of people were seen gathered in Nottingham city centre on Wednesday evening to take part in an international religious event.

'Thy Kingdom Come' describes itself as a "global prayer movement that invites Christians around the world to pray for more people to come to know Jesus".

Christians worldwide have been called to pray between Ascension and Pentecost (May 30 to June 9).

As part of the movement, people gathered in the Old Market Square to pray for Nottingham and the UK on Wednesday evening (June 5).

A Facebook post described the 'Bow Down' event as "a powerful evening of prayer" ending with the participants raising phone torches "as a symbol of light in our city".

Dave Miller, worship pastor at Trent Vineyard Church, helped to organised the second instalment of the event and said the attendance had doubled from last year.

He added: "The movement was initiated by Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, who simply invited churches across the country to gather and pray within this ten day window.

"We recite the Lord's Prayer hence the name, Thy Kingdom Come.

"During the event people are asked to use their phone lights to symbolise hope, life and light.

"One of the really lovely things is the sense of unity. It's greater than anything.

"We just want to see Nottingham thrive, so it was great to be right in the heart of the city.

"There was a quiet across the square as we knelt down and some people just wandered over to join in."

The Nottingham City Prayer group is organising a night of prayer and worship at the Trent Vineyard Church on June 7 with people from hundreds of churches across the region.

More than 1,000 people have confirmed their attendance, with the capacity set at 1,300.

The event page says people will be coming together with one "common purpose - to see our city transformed through prayer".

In a Facebook post, Nottingham City Prayer said: "1,144 people have already booked from 123 different churches/ministries!

"So we are set for an awesome night! There's only capacity for 1,300 so make sure you get one of the remaining tickets before Friday."

The prayer event at Vineyard Church takes place on Friday, June 7 between 7.30pm and 9.30pm.
