Hundreds of old tyres dumped in South Belfast

Hundreds of old tyres have been dumped on waste ground in South Belfast .

The tyres were ditched behind a wall at the site between Milner Street, off the Donegall Road, and the Westlink.

According to locals they were left in the area at the end of March.

Trevor Greer, a community worker in the area, said he was alerted to the incident on March 28.

He added: “It’s a huge amount of tyres, so it wasn’t like someone in a van emptying a few out. This must have been a lorry load. When I first heard I thought I was coming down to see a few dozen, but there’s loads, maybe a couple of hundred or so.

“They’re in behind the wall too, so it looks like who ever’s done it has driven onto the waste ground and made the effort to come down to this spot where they can’t be seen. There’s a cost per tyre to dispose of them legally so you can imagine someone has saved themselves a right few quid by dumping them here right next to people’s home. It’s a disgrace.”

Mr Greer added, however, that there has been at least one positive element in the incident.

July 12 Belfast parade route revised for 2019

He said: “Years back these would have been straight on the bonfire, but now people don’t want that. It was actually one of the people involved in the local bonfire that contacted me, so that to me is a positive that they don’t want this stuff on their fire. Thankfully as well, they weren’t dumped next month or someone else might have come along and taken them for a fire.

“There’s a bit of bureacracy involved in getting them shifted, but I’m hoping there’s going to be someone from the Environment Agency or Council out to take them away this week.”
