Hundreds of objections lodged against Cobblestone development 'from all over the world'

Over 400 objections have been made to Dublin City Council against the development of a 114 bedroom hotel on the site of Smithfield's Cobblestone pub.

Multiple protests against the development have taken place over the past few weeks and an online petition called "Save the Cobblestone" has received over 34,000 signatures at the time of writing.

The deadline for objections was yesterday, November 4th and many expressed their love for the historic pub.

One objector wrote that losing the Cobblestone will be "detrimental to both Irish culture and traditions"

She said: "As a foreigner living in Dublin for six years now, I have visited this pub countless times and I find myself bringing my foreign friends to it whenever they visit.

"This is because while the Cobblestone attracts tourists, it has not lost the essence of Irish music and incredible musicians still casually play at the venue.

"This is genuine and cannot be experienced in many other pubs around Dublin. Losing this space will therefore be detrimental to both Irish culture and traditions and its projected image."

Also among the objections was a French woman who said she has been coming to Ireland since she was a little girl.

She said in a hand-written letter: "I'm French but I am coming to Ireland since I was a little girl, I also lived there for many years.

"When I talk about this country that I love so much, Ireland, The Cobblestone comes to mind! I would advise everyone going to Dublin to go there to live their best, real Irish moment.

"What could a hotel bring to this place? Maybe a bed, but for sure not what Ireland and its people have to offer."

Another said: "If this hotel development goes ahead, you will destroy the essence of this city and that is something that cannot be retrieved.

"I ask you to imagine the future to come and whether you will be comfortable with visiting a museum, if they haven’t been bulldozed to make way for a hotel by then, and view our culture through a glass window?

"Will you visit uilleann pipes and fiddles that are no longer played?

"Will you listen to field recordings of singing sessions and people speaking a language now dead?"

Local councillor Nial Ring was among those who objected and spoke in support of the pub.

He said yesterday: ""Observations/objections came, literally, from all over the world, including America, Canada, Australia, Germany and Mexico.

"Of course, the vast majority came from Ireland and the common theme in all the submissions was the absolute rejection of any plan to interfere with the Cobblestone pub, a pub which through the work of Thomas Mulligan and his family, has, for over 30 years, nurtured, encouraged and supported Irish music, culture, history and our language"

"Tom and his wife Pauline made sincere personal heartfelt submissions, outlining the wonderful history of the pub and how it has become such a fundamental part of every aspect and part of the culture of our city."

A decision on the proposed development is due this month.
