Hundreds of Nigerian schoolboys freed, says state governor

Hundreds of Nigerian schoolboys freed, says state governor

Hundreds of schoolboys who were kidnapped in northern Nigeria have been freed, according to the governor of Katsina state.

Authorities say 344 boys were being held in neighbouring Zamfara state and were being returned home.

The boys were kidnapped a week ago after gunmen attacked their boarding school in the town of Kankara.

The armed group Boko Haram later claimed responsibility.

The group’s operations have previously been concentrated in Nigeria’s northeast. Katsina state lies in the country’s northwest.

On Thursday, protesters marched in Katsina state calling for the return of the boys and for better security.
