Hundreds of new homes planned for former Gateshead rail depot

Plans for hundreds of new homes in Gateshead have been lodged with the council.

Vistry Partnerships is behind proposals to build 300 homes and a community building on a former freight depot on St James Road.

If the scheme is given the go-ahead a derelict industrial building will be pulled down to make way for 240 houses and three blocks containing a total of 60 apartments.

The new properties would be a mixture of two to four bedroom houses and two bedroom flats, with 45 of these, or 15%, being classed as affordable housing.

There will also be a series of public open spaces dotted around the new estate that will feature foliage.

A planning statement submitted to the council said the scheme would provide much needed housing in the borough.

"The delivery of 300 new homes will form an important contribution to the Council’s housing requirement," it said.

The document also stated that the range of housing on offer made meant the scheme would provide homes for a range of people.

Of this it said: "This is considered an appropriate mix for families, young professionals and older people and is provided in an inherently sustainable location close to Gateshead town centre and key public transport links."

Gateshead Council's planning committee is expected to decide on the scheme by late April.
