Hundreds of new affordable homes proposed as Renfrewshire's housing investment plan goes up for scrutiny

Renfrewshire Council's plan for housing investment over the next half a decade is to be discussed by elected members this week.

The draft proposals for 2022 to 2027 are set to be presented to the communities, housing and planning policy board tomorrow and outline earmarked locations for new affordable homes across the region.

Over the five years to March 2021, the council has targeted building 1,000 affordable properties. A recent audit highlighted 850 of those have been completed but several sites are still under construction due to delays caused by the pandemic.

Ninety-five new homes for social rent have recently been finished in Johnstone Castle while work on developments in the Thrushcraigs and Amochrie Road areas of Paisley is due for completion this month.

The fresh plan shows work is underway on several other properties due to be finished at the end of next year or early 2023 and outlines more locations where development will start in 2022/23 or beyond.

Paisley Northwest councillors Kenny and Mags MacLaren said they were pleased to see affordable homes being built in their ward and have urged residents to take part in a consultation on the new plan between August 24 and September 28.

“It is important that anyone with an interest in the housing supply in Renfrewshire contributes to this consultation," said Councillor Mags MacLaren.

“It is good to see within the plan the development of specialist housing such as the properties for older people at Westerfield House and also in Station Road.

“We are both looking forward to these new homes becoming available to tenants as soon as possible.”

Councillor Kenny MacLaren added: "I’m pleased to see the construction of new homes within my ward including the new housing in Ferguslie and the west end of Paisley. This will bring long-awaited new homes into both areas."

A development of 16 flats by Paisley Housing Association (PHA) at Westerfield House is due for completion early next year.

Loretto Housing Association is set to deliver 58 social-rented homes in Dargavel Village by next August while 131 properties by Sanctuary Scotland and PHA in Glenburn are set to be finished next July, according to council papers.

A total of 101 new council homes in the Ferguslie Park area of Paisley are set to be completed at the end of next year and another 99 properties in the Millarston district are scheduled for early 2023.

Thirty-nine council houses in Auchengreoch Road in Johnstone will add to the affordable housing supply in the south-west of the town by next September and development of 42 homes by Williamsburgh Housing Association in Albert Road, Renfrew, is due for completion in late 2022.

Other areas where construction on hundreds of homes will begin taking place next year and into 2023 include Sutherland Street and Underwood Lane in Paisley's West End, Abbey Quarter in the town centre, Gallowhill, MacDowall Street and Ryefield in Johnstone and Station Road and Orchard Street in Paisley.

Further phases of development in Dargavel Village, Johnstone Castle and Paisley's west end are also scheduled to start at some point in 2022/23.

The draft plan states: "This draft strategic housing investment plan supports the provision of a range and choice of affordable housing of the right type and size to meet the needs of different groups.

"It is being sent to local tenants and residents associations, community councils and other key partners for comment and is being published on the council’s community website with comments invited from all interested parties.

"The comments and feedback received as part of the consultation process will be considered when finalising the strategic housing investment plan."

The final plan will be submitted for approval by the board on October 26.
