Hundreds of modded vehicles pack out Nottingham Sainsbury's car park in night-time meet

Hundreds of petrolheads packed out a Sainsbury's car park in Nottingham to show off their vehicles and discuss their passion for motoring.

'Modified Car Driver' organises public meet-ups across the country where car lovers can gather and socialise.

The motoring event happened at the Castle Marina store, which had closed, on Sunday night (March 31), with engines revving and music filling the air.

It has been met with anger by some in the past, who criticised the noise levels and amount of vehicles in one area.

But owner of Modified Car Driver, Simon, who helps set up the events, said the passion was a "way of life for some".

He did not want to give his surname, but said: "For us it's about everyone having a similar interest in cars and meeting at a social event to chat.

"Some people have a negative view of us, that comes from people turning up wanting to mess around, revving the engine.

"If that happens we tell them to stop and eventually ask them to leave. We inform the police before we meet. We had some officers down earlier having a walk around and a chat.

"99 percent of people here just want to have a social event and talk about their passion.

"We are a static meet, everyone can show their vehicles off and walk round and have a chat with each other, people are very passionate about it.

"We're here to have a safe and enjoyable time.

"We've had events at Burton, Uttoxeter, Leicester, Derby and Milton Keynes as well as Nottingham.

"On a busy night we'd probably have a turnaround of about 1,000 cars. We try not to come to the same spot too often as we don't want to annoy people.

"People spend tens of thousands of pounds on their vehicles so they want to meet to show them."

People of all ages were at the meet-up, including young children.

Steve Tuckwood, 21, of Leicester, helps out at the events, running the merchandise stall which sells t-shirts.

He spent £11,000 on his previous Honda Civic FN2 and now drives an Audi.

"Cars are my main passion. I don't do anything else, I don't drink, I just spend money on cars. My old man builds cars and my brother got me into the car scene.

"Everyone here has the same interests and just wants to have a look around and a talk."

Martin Stone, 39, of Forest Fields, had come with his wife Tara, 40, driving a Ford Focus.

He said: "I think it's a good event. You don't get any trouble that I've seen before. People can be a bit boisterous revving the engines but it's just a show-off thing and people soon tell them.

"People here are so passionate about it and want to meet up. It used to be up at Phoenix Park but is now here."

When we left the event, a passer-by said the meet was "anti-social". The woman, who did not want to be named, swore before saying: "It's not fair. There's a hotel here, with restaurants nearby. No one should have to put up with it."
