Hundreds of migrants clash with police guarding Mexico border river crossing

Migrants clashed with police as hundreds tried to cross a river into Mexico and defy President Donald Trump’s bid to stop them reaching the United States.

They became stranded along the Suchiate river after running up against around 100 National Guard troops who formed a barrier along the normally porous crossing.

The migrants, mainly from Honduras, took to the water after being refused permission to cross a nearby bridge.

“We are in no-man’s land,” said Alan Mejia, whose two-year-old son was cradled in his arms clad only in a nappy as his wife and 12-year-old son stood nearby.

Mr Mejia said he had joined in five previous migrant caravans but never made it past the Mexican city of Tijuana, on the country’s border with the US.

Unlike with many previous such caravans, there was no sign of humanitarian aid arriving for those stuck at the river.

Throngs waded across the Suchiate into Mexico hoping to test President Trump’s plan to keep Central American migrants away from America’s southern border.

Some migrants hurled rocks at police, who huddled behind their plastic shields and threw missiles back.

Mexico has ramped up its immigration policing following threats of economic tariffs from Mr Trump.
