Hundreds of lambs killed in truck crash near Vic-SA border

A sheep truck has crashed at Apsley near the Victoria-South Australia border, killing hundreds of lambs.

The truck was carrying 660 of the animals when it tipped over while travelling on the Wimmera Highway just before 8:00am.

About 300 of the sheep have died.

CFA incident controller Stephen Hocking said the driver was helping to move the surviving stock.

"In this situation, all you can do is try and help anything that's still alive and make sure that anything that's obviously very distressed is put down as quickly as we can," he said.

"There's a waterhole not far away, so we've pushed all the live ones up [near] the waterhole and they seem quite content there at the moment.

"And we're just in the process of getting all the dead animals loaded."

The driver, a man in his 50s from nearby Edenhope, was uninjured.

"He's a local driver who's been around this corner a hundred times or more so he's not sure what happened," Mr Hocking said.

"The ambulance has been in attendance but he's refused to go in.

"He's OK but he's more concerned about the stock at the moment, and making sure that everything that can be done is being done for them.

"He's very upset about the fact that it's happened."
