Hundreds of household bins seized as council cracks down on recycling rule breakers

Hundreds of households have had rubbish bins seized after breaking recycling rules.

A council took on 12 “advisers” to find recycling bins contaminated with general waste and slap on a yellow warning sticker.

Under a “two strikes and you’re out” rule, repeat offenders’ green bins are then impounded for six months.

Kirklees council in West Yorkshire said that 1,341 bins in Huddersfield had been seized since the policy began on April 1.

Furious residents have blockaded rubbish vans and slapped a warning sticker on the head of one unfortunate “bin inspector”.

Frustrated homeowner Tony Swaffen, 32, returned home to find his bin had been removed.

He said: “It’s so annoying. For the next six months I’m going to have to put my green waste in my black bin.”

However, the Labour-run council said rejected recyclable rubbish had fallen from 33% to 6% since the policy began.

A spokeswoman added that around 33% of offenders were “not making any attempt to recycle at all”.
