Hundreds of homes planned at former Ministry of Defence oil storage depot

Houses could be built on the site of a former Ministry of Defence oil storage depot under new plans by Wirral Growth Company.

In a joint venture between Wirral council and Muse Developments, 250 new homes could be built on the site, at Old Hall Road in Bromborough.

Residents are being asked to give their views on the plans, which are out for consultation, as part of Wirral Growth Company's masterplan for the Bromborough area.

The site, which has been earmarked for "employment-led development" since 2000 has laid empty for the past 15 years with a spokesperson from Wirral council saying developments have been "difficult to progress"

Launching the consultation last week, a spokesperson for Wirral council said: "Over the next month, people will be given the opportunity to share their views on Wirral Growth Company’s plans for the redevelopment of the former Ministry of Defence (MoD) site at Old Hall Road, Bromborough.

"The virtual public consultation will run until Thursday 15 July 2021 and will provide everyone with a clear opportunity to view, discuss and provide feedback on the emerging plans, which propose the delivery of up to 250 much-needed homes at the site.

"The site sits adjacent to Wirral International Business Park and was formally used as an oil storage depot by the MoD but has now been vacant for more than 15 years.

"The site had previously been allocated since 2000 for employment generating uses, it has been difficult to progress an employment-led development and ongoing evidence confirms that redeveloping the site for such uses continues to be very challenging from a marketing and viability perspective.

"Set against this challenging background, the site is now considered better suited for residential led development. The plans are being brought forward by Wirral Growth Company – the 50:50 joint venture partnership between Wirral Council and national urban regeneration innovators, Muse Developments.

"The partnership understands that it is important for local people to have their say on the emerging plans for the site.

"This consultation is being held to provide a way for people to share their views, so these can be taken on board as part of the work that is being undertaken to progress an outline planning application."

The spokesperson added the masterplan proposes "a new, vibrant, residential neighbourhood for sustainable family living" which would fit well within the surrounding area, close to the Leverhulme Sports Pitches, Eastham Country Park and waterfront.

The spokesperson said: "The proposals also include a mix of new high quality and sustainable homes, together with associated infrastructure, landscaping, play space, sustainable drainage features and access from Old Hall Road."

Residents have until 15 July to submit their views at the Wirral Growth Company website, and Wirral council say the consultation will "shape the growth company's planning application, which is anticipated to be submitted to the council later in the summer."
