Hundreds of guns handed in for NSW amnesty

Residents of NSW have turned over hundreds of unwanted, illegal and unregistered guns as part of the national firearms amnesty.

More than 1700 firearms have been surrendered in the state since July and more than 2200 have been registered.

NSW Crime Stoppers Chief Executive Officer Peter Price said residents "want to do the right thing" and encouraged more people to consider doing the same.

"Gun crime crosses borders. It may not cause harm in your community but in a community far away," Mr Price said.

"Please, for the safety of your family, friends, and wider community, just hand them in."

Under the amnesty, people can register or surrender illegal, unwanted or unregistered firearms at no cost and without penalty to a police station or licensed firearms dealer.

NSW Police Prosecutions and Licensing Enforcement Commander Scott Cook said it was everyone's responsibility to make sure firearms were registered.

"Our focus, as always, is public safety," Mr Cook said.

"We want to reduce the number of illegal firearms in the community, so they don't fall into the hands of criminals, who use unregistered firearms for intimidation and violence."

The amnesty coincided with the launch of Gun Safe, an online portal for managing firearms transactions in NSW by replacing manual licence applications with real time verification.

Participating dealers can now accept and record unregistered firearms through the platform.

The registry will be linked to the acquisition and disposal of firearms in NSW and interstate and monitors unusual or unverified transactions.
