Hundreds of fines for breaking Covid rules handed out to students in Nottingham

The University of Nottingham handed out the largest number of fines to its students for breaking Covid rules, according to latest figures.

British universities have dished out more than £60,000 in fines to punish partying students breaking Covid rules since the start of term, statistics show.

Bosses are getting tough on rule-breakers and those caught in groups of more than six - with one institution even suspending five students.

Data shows that the University of Nottingham has dished out the largest number of fines, at 608. This is followed by Oxford Brookes at 340.

Oxford Brookes tops the ranking for the highest financial total handed out to date, at £18,950. Manchester Metropolitan comes in second with £15,600.

The figures, obtained by student news site The Tab, show some universities are taking a firm stance on coronavirus guidelines.

Five students from the University of Leicester were temporarily suspended for partying in their halls in one of the more severe punishments.

Other universities topping the rankings for financial totals include Royal Holloway (£8,200) and the University of Aberdeen (£5,750).

The University of Manchester (334) and the University of Liverpool (262) came third and fourth in the list of number of students disciplined.

Some universities had an earlier deadline when replying to the request so may have lower numbers because of this.

A spokesperson from The University of Nottingham said: "There are currently 55 cases of Covid-19 from a population of 35,000 students and the overwhelming majority are following the rules. However, we are redoubling our efforts to support students in observing social distancing measures and socialising safely within their households.

"Where a minority of students breach the guidelines, the University supports robust action by Nottinghamshire Police in applying fines, which are then reinforced by University disciplinary action, fines and campus sanctions where suspension and exclusion are potential outcomes.

"To date 672 disciplinary actions have been taken under the University’s Student Code of Discipline, which have to date resulted in 560 formal warnings, 91 University fines and there are an additional 21 cases pending."
