Hundreds of England fans flood Monument for mini-rave after Euro 2020 final

Sadly, football did not come home - and neither did some England fans who flooded Newcastle’s Monument after the Euro 2020 final.

Footage taken near Grey’s Monument in the city centre just after midnight showed hundreds of supporters marking the occasion with a mini-rave.

Undeterred by the defeat, the crowd could be seen dancing and chanting ‘it’s coming home,’ with many draped in England flags.

Images taken of post-match scenes throughout the night also showed crowds near Times Square and Bigg Market. One showed a police officer attending to people on the ground, while in another a man in an England shirt is being held up and given water.

Northumbria Police had earlier urged people to enjoy the final on Sunday responsibly and respectfully after chaotic scenes in Newcastle following the semi-final win against Denmark.

Footage on Wednesday night showed officers struggling to control rowdy celebrations in the city centre.

One video outside the Centre for Life showed crowds standing in the road, blocking cars from passing while banging on the windows. The clip also showed fans banging on a police van.

Footage was also taken of a man standing on a bus, while another climbs onto a moving taxi.

The force said they would have a “highly visible presence to deter this type of behaviour on Sunday”.

Fans were left devastated when the nation's dreams of being crowned champions of Europe in front of a home crowd at Wembley Stadium were crushed in the final seconds on Sunday night.

Italy ended the Three Lions' bid for glory with a 3-2 victory on penalties.

‘Gutted’ fans said they remained proud of the team after the penalty defeat.

At the PaddyPark fans zone in Newcastle, Jake Shepherd, a 19-year-old project coordinator, said he was "gutted" but the tournament run "sets us for the World Cup - who says we cannot win it?".

Student Jack Brown, 18, said: "I'm sad we lost but they have done so well.

"I'm proud of this team."
