Hundreds of Edinburgh prisoners self-isolating after Covid outbreak at Saughton prison

30 prisoners have tested positive after Saughton prison was hit with a coronavirus outbreak.

Saughton Prison confirmed to Edinburgh Live that 200 prisoners are now also in self-isolation as a precaution after potentially coming into contact with the virus.

A Scottish Prison Service spokesman said: "There have been a number of people who tested positive there, it is understood to be about 30.

"We don't know the exact amount of these cases that may be asymptomatic.

"About 200 people are now self-isolating as a precaution because they may have come into contact with someone who tested positive.

"The outbreak affects Hermiston Hall, but the rest of the jail is functioning normally."
