Hundreds of cyclists to take to streets for Tour de Bristol cycling race

Hundreds of cyclists will be taking to the streets of Bristol this weekend for an annual charity race.

A total of 1,100 people have signed up to take part in the annual Tour de Bristol charity race on Saturday (April 6) to raise money for St Peter's Hospice.

The event is in its fifth year and 2019 has seen a record number of entrants.

It is hoped the event, where people collect sponsorship in turn for their pedal power, will raise more than £130,000 for the hospice.

Cyclists will take on a range of routes from 40km to a staggering 100km ride, starting from the UWE campus in North Bristol.

The 100km route, which will see riders set off at 8am, takes in the Old Severn Bridge and Monmouth before heading to the Wye Valley.

Cyclists will return via Redbrook, Brockweir and the amazing Tintern, past the abbey ruins before heading back towards the Severn Crossing and into Bristol.

The 65km route also takes in the old Severn Bridge and the start of the Wye Valley while the shorter 40km route covers South Gloucestershire and the Wye Valley.

Feed stations for hungry and thirsty cyclists will be set up along the routes.

Hospice events fundraiser Louisa James said: "The Tour de Bristol is one of the biggest cycle rides in Bristol and this year we have seen our largest number of entrants ever.

"We are thrilled that over the last five years it has become so popular with hospice supporters and the Bristol cycling community.

"The race also attracts entrants from right across the country.

"We are hoping this year's event will raise more than £130,000 for the hospice."
