Hundreds of climate change protesters to march through Leeds city centre

Friday will see hundreds of climate change protesters marching through Leeds city centre for the global climate crisis.

Youth4Climate will be hosting the event at Millennium Square to protest youths being the most affected by the crisis.

Speeches, music and artwork will all on between 3pm and 6pm on September 24.

The event will host a vast range of public speakers, including health workers wanting to raise awareness on the effects climate change has on mental health.

There will also be a big petition asking for the Government and Leeds MP’s to back the zero hour bill.

The event comes from the inspiration of Greta Thunberg, where a group of minors have formed on the idea of protesting once a month on a Friday in Leeds City Centre.

The groups largest event to date was in September 2019 when 1,200 people showed up to unite.

Spokesperson and organiser, Robbie Strathdee, Leeds Youth4Climate explains, "Youth are the worst hit by the climate crisis therefore, it is our aim to make sure the climate movement is plastered in the news.”

“The youth have done the least to damage this planet, and we want justice because we are the ones who are suffering most from this crisis. The solution has to benefit the people who are suffering.”

“All our previous marches down Headrow and Briggate have always run smoothly, we’ve never had trouble with the police. However due to the recent M25 strikes we have decided to do a stationary protest this time,” says Mr Strathdee.

Before adding, “we are hoping to get the movement started again; beginning by raising awareness of our acts.”
