Hundreds of children warned to stay home as multiple Covid-19 cases confirmed at Irish school

A primary school in Co Limerick has been forced to shut after multiple children tested positive for Covid-19.

The school is in the east of the county, and was asked to close by public health officials due to a high number of infections.

Every pupil in the school was designated as a close contact and will now have to be tested.

School officials warned parents to ensure their children remain at home and stay away from "social gatherings and shops" and to avoid visiting other people's homes.

A letter sent to parents and guardians reads: "Due to a number of confirmed Covid-19 cases, the Department of Public Health HSE Mid-West have deemed that it is best to close the school.

"All boys in the school are now deemed by Public Health to be close contacts.

"This means that the boys will have to limit their movements, avoid social gatherings, shops etc, and not visit other people's homes.

"Due to new cases being reported, I have been informed of the following:

"1. Your child will have to be tested twice on Day 0 and Day 10. This includes children who have already been tested. The HSE will contact you regarding appointments for these tests.

"2. I have been advised to ask you not to bring your son to a walk-in test centre and to wait for the HSE appointments.

"3. If your child tests negative on Day 10 then they may return to school.

"Each class will receive a letter from the HSE detailing the steps and procedures to follow and I would ask that you take the time to read it carefully.

"These letters will be sent to your email so please check them regularly."
