Hundreds of cannabis plants found in open woodland near Mansfield

Police have seized around 750 cannabis plants found in open woodland near Mansfield.

Nottinghamshire Police received a call after two large growing areas were found in the woods near Rufford Colliery Lane, Rainworth, on Monday evening (September 14).

Further investigations by officers found hundreds of plants which were housed within dozens of large growing pots.

Nottinghamshire Police's drug recovery team has since removed the plants from the site and have launched an investigation into the crops.

Sergeant Mark Talbot said: "There are many things that you may expect to find during a walk in the woods – but a large cannabis grow isn’t one of them.

"Clearly most cannabis grows are inside – hidden from view on loft spaces, basements and industrial buildings.

"In this case the people responsible sought to hide what they were doing in dense woodland.

"This will undoubtedly be a surprise to many people but there are some varieties of cannabis that will grow outdoors in the UK."

No arrests have been made as part of the police's enquiries.

Anyone who has any information about this incident is asked to call the force on 101 quoting incident 869 of September 14.

Anyone who has suspicions about the cultivation of cannabis anywhere else can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
