Hundreds of bin collections missed in North Somerset amid staff shortages

Hundreds of bin collections have been missed in North Somerset amid a staff shortage in the area.

The local council has said that they could not collect around 1000 recycling bins yesterday (December 31).

Bins were not collected in Worlebury, Worle and Clevedon, but the authority said that two crews would be out tomorrow to deal with the problem.

In a message posted on their Facebook page, the council wrote: "There are around 1000 outstanding recycling collections which we're not able to complete today. These are in Worlebury, Worle and Clevedon (Otter, Tone, Halliswell and Dart Road).

"Please leave boxes out. We have two crews out on Sunday 2 Jan."

North Somerset council has experienced disruption to its waste collection service throughout the last week.

A number of rubbish and recycling collections were missed on December 28 due to staff off sick or in isolation because of Covid-19.

At the time, a North Somerset Council spokesman said: “We are experiencing some shortages of staff due to sickness and covid-19 isolation, but all recycling and general waste crews are out this morning (Wednesday, December 29).

“There may be delays returning to roads on the missed collection report from yesterday, so please be patient and continue to leave your bins out.”

This is not the first time collections have been disrupted due to the pandemic.

During 2021, the local authority has been left short handed with crews off sick and isolating because of coronavirus.

It was also forced to suspend green waste collections in the autumn due to crew shortages and lack of HGV drivers.
