Hundreds of bikers take to the road to donate Easter eggs for children

Revving engines reverberated around Nottingham's Forest Recreation Ground as hundreds of bikers joined this year's Motorcycle Easter Egg Run.

The annual event, which took place on Sunday (April 14), involved many bikers donning fancy dress costumes as they travelled from Nottingham to Mansfield Fire Station.

The participants then dropped off Easter Eggs which will be donated to children in need, with funds also being raised to go towards day trips and special events.

Among this year's bikers was Angela Smith, of Long Eaton, who, along with friend Rob Abbott, had collected 110 eggs for the cause.

She said: "It is a bit of fun but you also get to bring a smile to a child's face. There are all sorts of different situations and not every child gets to enjoy something special."

Mr Abbott, who travelled from Derby for the event and was dressed as a chicken, added: "Every single egg will go to a child who probably wouldn't have got one and you can just imagine the smile, hence going a bit over the top (with fancy dress)."

The annual ride has now taken place for 39 years and is run by a small group of volunteers from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, who organise and co-ordinate the event.

The organising team then work alongside Sure Start children's centres in Nottinghamshire to donate the eggs. They also work with When You Wish Upon a Star to provide experiences for ill youngsters.

Organiser Tim Marston, watch manager at Arnold Fire Station, said: "It has gone really well. As an event it never ceases to amaze me the generosity of bikers."

He added: "This is more than just about chocolate, it is the fact that kids know somebody else is thinking about them and the money that is raised will hopefully help some disadvantaged children."
