Hundreds of banking and finance jobs — In the week 06/09/10

Accounting: Big Four accounting giant PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) has announced plans to create 800 jobs. The new positions — which are in addition to the 1,200 graduate recruits the company takes on — will be for experienced staff, from junior through to senior director level, and will include roles supporting the growth of the company's consulting practices. Around half of the new jobs will be in London and the south-east.

Financial services: A injection of public cash will help Barclays create 600 jobs in Glasgow, reports The Scotsman. Following a grant of almost £6.6m from Scottish Enterprise, Barclays plans to create a new global services hub to support its investment banking and wealth management division. The jobs will be created over the next four years, although Barclays said it had already filled or was currently recruiting 50% of the posts.

School leavers: A pub operator is creating 1,000 new roles for school leavers in the next year, coupled with the opportunity to gain further qualifications on the job. JD Wetherspoon will offer 16- and 17-year-olds positions working front-of-house serving customers, as well as in the pubs' kitchens, reports Recruiter. New recruits can also study for NVQ qualifications with the option of completing a professional diploma and honours degree if they progress to a management position.

Banking: The first new bank to open on Britain's high streets for more than a century is creating 100 new jobs, reports Reuters. The recruitment drive for Metro Bank's next three stores has been designed to meet growing demand for the bank's services. There are a variety of vacancies currently on offer, including store manager, cashiers, a mortgage adviser and customer services representatives.

Construction: The building of a new M4 link road is expected to create hundreds of construction jobs. As many as 600 jobs will be created during the construction of the £107m link, in a project which will take 33 months and will connect Port Talbot and the docks area to junction 38 of the motorway in Wales, reports the BBC.

Equestrian: A fund set up to provide training grants for people committed to a career working with horses is now accepting applications. The Hendelah Waley Equestrian Fund provides £1,750, which is divided between three recipients. The money can be used to pay for professional lessons or to contribute towards The British Horse Society exams, reports Horse and Hound.
