Hundreds march in Darwin for language revival as NAIDOC week draws to close

This year's theme was Our Languages Matter.

NAIDOC week celebrations in Darwin have come to an end, with a sea of 200 people walking to celebrate Indigenous culture in Australia.

This year's theme is Our Languages Matter — which was echoed through chants and those taking part.

Social worker Desmond Campbell explained the role of language in his life.

"It's hard living in two worlds. Sometimes you feel like you have to sacrifice your own culture and language to go away for education," Mr Campbell said.

"Through language, and by keeping it strong or even learning your language, it means your gaining a bit of your identity back and being proud of yourself.

"That represents a prouder community as a whole."

Today's march put a spotlight on the Top End, inviting Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people to walk together.

Normie Grogan from Darwin said it was a time for the community to come together.

"Just celebrating NAIDOC week with everyone, you're bound to see a bit of family. A lot of the times you get together it's for sadness, but this one time of the year it's a good occasion," he said.

"Language is apart of your identity and culture. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language has been put down. It's good that there's a resurgence."

From storytelling and song lines, it is an opportunity for all ages of the community to engage with a shared history.
