Hundreds line the streets for Manchester's Irish Parade

Hundreds of people turned out for the Manchester Irish Parade today, despite being met with concern over coronavirus.

Avoiding the rain, dance troupes, bands and Irish wolfhounds Finn and Oisin led the green and gold coloured parade along Deansgate.

The streets were lined with Irish flags and Guinness hats as the procession made its way from Queens Road near to the Irish World Heritage Center.

Organisers of the St Patrick’s Day Parade have faced some criticism from people concerned about the spread of coronavirus .

Similar parades in London, Dublin, Liverpool  and New York were cancelled because of the pandemic.

But that didn’t stop some fans of the event joining in with the celebrations, which have been held in Manchester city centre for over three decades.

Starting at midday, the procession finished at Deansgate and Liverpool Rd at around 2pm.

Chair of the Irish festival, Coun John Flanagan said: "It was all great fun and cheered us all up.

"The tractors and donkeys made it a unique Manchester parade.

"In regards to medical safety, we checked with the Department of Health, and there was no prohibition in regards to the parade.

"My own family were in the parade and we took no risks with public safety or medical issues.

"It's very important that we don't over panic and listen to the Chief medical officer, otherwise it will turn Manchester into a medieval town.

"Advice was given to everyone who came to the parade about health and safety issues."
