Hundreds hospitalised with ‘mystery’ illness in southern India

An unidentified disease has hospitalised at least 400 people and killed one in India’s southern Andhra Pradesh state, according to government officials.

The mystery illness was detected on Saturday evening.

Patients have been experiencing symptoms such as seizures, nausea and loss of consciousness.

The state’s health minister said all patients tested negative for coronavirus and blood tests did not find any evidence of a viral infection.

However, excessive amounts of lead and nickel were found in the blood samples of patients who had fallen sick, a medical official has told Al Jazeera.
