Hundreds of people gathered yesterday to highlight “a shovel” still hasn’t been used at the site where up to 798 babies are buried.
Catherine Corless said the idea for the memorial event came from Amanda Larkin, whose mother Carmel spent more than five years at the Tuam Mother and Baby Home.
She added: “We thought it would be a good idea to commemorate the first anniversary of the big vigil we had last year on the day of the Pope’s visit in Knock. It was very emotional and it was a wonderful day.”
Following a test excavation in 2016, human remains were found on the land at the Galway site.
Ms Corless said: “There’ll be no rest or end to this until they take the babies out of there and give them a proper burial.
“It’s a year on from the Pope’s visit and nothing has moved on for the living or the dead.
"A shovel hasn’t come to this site and that’s the development we need.”
