Hundreds gather to say goodbye to 'smiley' 22-year-old who died in Durham crash

Family and friends gathered to celebrate the life of a "wonderful and smiley" 22-year-old who sadly died in a crash on the A19 in County Durham.

Jack Kennedy, a much-loved son, grandson, great-grandson, and fiancé, from Hartlepool, was driving between Seaham and Murton on October 29 when he was involved in the fatal crash.

Hundreds gathered for his funeral at St Hilda's church in Hartlepool on Tuesday to say their goodbyes before the congregation moved to Stranton crematorium, Teesside Live reports.

An ornate horse-drawn carriage carried the equestrian-loving lad's coffin to the church, with several other carriages in tow.

Inside, friends and family sang 'All Things Bright and Beautiful', and touching prayers and poems were shared.

The family said they were "grateful for all the flowers, cards, messages of condolences and support" they have received since Jack's death.

In a statement at the time of his death, his family said: "Jack was a wonderful son and fiancé who always put others before himself.

"He was very hardworking but loved spending time with his friends outdoors.

"Jack’s main passion was horses and he built a close-knit friendship with those in that community who will miss him dearly."

Police are still appealing for witnesses of the incident, which happened at 8.43pm on the southbound carriage of the A19 near the Dalton Park slip road.
