Hundreds gather at protests in Dublin calling on boycott of Israel

Hundreds of people have gathered in Dublin today to protest Israel's occupation in Palestine.

The protests today were part of a global day of action called in response to the recent escalation of anti-Palestinian violence that has left more than 250 people dead.

In the city centre, the people who gathered could be heard chanting: "Five, six, seven, eight, Israel is a terrorist state. Free, Free Palestine."

The protest was attended by an estimated 1,000 people, and People Before Profit's Richard Boyd Barrett made a speech condemning the violence in Israel.

He drew comparisons between Palestine and the Apartheid state in South Africa, and said that the Irish people must take action to help the violence in Gaza.

Barrett referred to the Dunnes workers who, in 1987, refused to handle oranges from South Africa in protest apartheid, saying it led to a ban on imports.

He stated that similar action must be taken, saying: "The people of Palestine are doing their bit, now we must do the same. There must be self determination for all the people of Palestine."

Today's march was organised by Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) and was originally due to take place at the Spire in Dublin last Saturday, May 15.

However the event was cancelled due to warnings from An Garda Siochana that it would be in breach of Covid regulations.

It was reported on Friday that a ceasefire had been mediated by Egypt, ending eleven days of hostilities.

During those eleven days, Gaza suffered countless air strikes from Israeli military, which it said were a respnse to rockets fired at Israel by Palestinian militants.

Gaza medical officials say 248 people were killed in the Palestinian enclave, and aid officials have expressed concern about the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

Health officials said 13 people were killed in Israel in the hostilities, during which the Israeli military said Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other militant groups fired about 4,350 rockets, many of which did not reach Israel or were intercepted.
