Hundreds died in Liverpool tragedy many have never heard of

At Liverpool's famous Pier Head, between the famous Three Graces and the ferry terminal, there is a small plaque.

The plaque reads: "In memory of those who sailed from Liverpool on S.S Arandora Star and who tragically lost their lives when the ship was sunk by torpedo 75 miles north west of Donegal on 2 July 1940."

It adds: "Of 1,673 people aboard, over 800 mainly non-combatants drowned."

The plaque has been in place since 2008, but the sinking of the Arandora Star and Liverpool's role in the tragedy is perhaps something many people in the city are still unaware of.

The ship was a converted liner that was used to transport internees - and some German prisoners of war - out of Britain and to Canada.

Having departed from Liverpool, the ship was sunk by a torpedo from a U-boat off the coast of Ireland on July 2 1940.

There were hundreds of Italian and German internees aboard who were rallied up when Germany and Italy joined World War Two and sent to internment camps across Britain.

Overnight, people living in this city and this country were deemed "enemy aliens" and taken from their homes in the middle of the night.

Many of those arrested and placed onto the ship were Italian shop owners, barbers, market salesmen and others who had been held by the British authorities because they were considered a threat after Italy had joined forces with Germany in the war.

Some families would never see their fathers again as they were packed on to the doomed Arandora Star.

The story of the S.S Arandora Star is now being brought back into focus through a new film created in the city from which it set sail on that fateful journey.

And it stars some young Scouse actors who are helping to tell the tragic stories of some of the families impacted by the tragedy.

Twins Jack and Ethan O'Connor will make their screen acting debuts in Enemy of the Heart - a film written by Claryn Scott that is being produced in partnership with Northern Wave Films and Avengers Media.

The talented eight-year-olds from Aigburth were selected from more than 600 hopefuls who auditioned for Enemy of The Heart, earlier this year.

Inspired by true events, the film centres around an Italian family living in Liverpool during the outbreak of war and how their lives are thrown into turmoil when Luca's father Gio Cipriani (Mattia Paradiso) is interned as an Enemy Alien and sent aboard the Arandora Star.

Jack plays Liverpool-born Luca, raised by an Italian father and Irish mother.

Jack learnt Italian for the role and also dances and plays guitar in the production.

Speaking to the ECHO, he said his first acting role was an emotional one.

He said: "I really enjoyed it. It was my first job and it was just brilliant.

"I think it's really bad that just because people were born in a different country they were taken away and put on a boat that was then sunk. You can't help where you were born.

"The part was very emotional - I enjoyed bringing the script to life."

Jack and Ethan's mum, Sharon O'Connor said: "We were in lockdown with not much happening and Jack especially has always been interested in acting.

"When he was cast as the child lead in Enemy of The Heart, we were made up. For Ethan to be cast as his best friend Timmy, is extra special for the boys. We can't wait to see it.”

She added: "I'm most proud of the fact that the boys understood how wrong it is for people to be treated differently because of where they are born, those are the values I have tried to show them and want them to have."

Filming for Enemy of the Heart has taken place in Liverpool, Wirral and Cheshire and the film is now in the post production stage.

It will be launched onto the international festival circuit in September.
