Hundreds break lockdown to surround and jeer on men in park boxing match

Hundreds broke lockdown to gather and jeer on two men in a park boxing match.

Footage captured and posted to TikTok showed the massive crowd surrounding the men who were embroiled in a fight in Birmingham's Cannon Hill Park.

Equipped with boxing gloves, the pair were filmed throwing punches at one another in a make-shift ring as a circle of onlookers watched on.

As the fans shout and scream, one can be heard above the crowd yelling: 'Yo, bang him, bang him, bang him'.

Many were seen holding their phones above their heads to record the fight, with the footage above emerging on ImJustBrum this week, reports Birmingham Live.

It's believed the incident took place last month when hundreds gathered in the park after lockdown measures eased.

Rule-breaking revellers flocked to the park for the 'organised party' before packing into a small area for the boxing match.

Under the current Covid restrictions, outdoor gatherings are restricted to a group of six from any number of households, or a group of any size from up to two households.

The organised gathering was billed as 'Birmingham's hottest student link-up' - with unverified reports people travelled from as far away as London to attend.

A flyer for the '21 Degrees' event advertised 'mocktails, cocktails, music, rounders, football and water fights' at the Russell Road site - as well as the chance to meet other students from Aston, Birmingham City University and the University of Birmingham.

Rubbish from the gathering including bottles, cups, food waste and plastic bags were left strewn across the park in the aftermath of the party.

Most recently, police were called to attend another, separate 'large gathering' at the same park.

Emergency services, including two ambulances, were called to attend at 10.30pm on Tuesday, April 20, following reports of the event.

Officers, who were on scene to 'monitor' the pre-planned social, found some attendees were 'clearly not socially distancing' and risked spreading coronavirus.

Though no trouble was reported, police said they found evidence the gathering was an 'organised event' and officers are 'looking into' the event.

Speaking after the event, Birmingham Police Inspector Neil Kirkpatrick continued to urge people to observe the current Government restrictions.

He warned officers would continue to patrol Cannon Hill Park - among other areas - to ensure Covid-19 rules are followed.

He said: “The organising of such events is in breach of current CoVID legislation. Anyone found planning large, unauthorised events risks being handed a substantial fine.

"I would urge people to observe the current coronavirus restrictions and hopefully soon, people will able to gather in parks without restrictions.

"Until then, officers will continue to patrol open spaces such as Cannon Hill Park to ensure Covid restrictions are being adhered to.”
