Hundreds attend funeral of late RTE broadcaster Marian Finucane in Kill, Co Kildare

Hundreds are attending the funeral of broadcasting giant Marian Finucane today.

Ireland's queen of talk radio, who was 69, died suddenly at her Punchestown, Co Kildare home last Thursday.

The chief mourners at today's funeral mass at St Brigid's Church in Kill were her husband John Clarke and their son Jack.

They were joined by other relatives and friends in paying a final tribute to the broadcaster, as well Marian's colleagues from RTE.

The funeral mass of Marian Finucane had an added poignancy for the RTE family, who are also coming to terms with the death announced this morning of 2FM's legendary DJ Larry Gogan.

Ms Finucane had been due to return to the airwaves last Saturday for her morning show after a holiday in India where she and John had attended a wedding.

Her funeral mass reflected her love of Irish traditional music and featured renowned piper Peter Brown on Uileann pipes, who played The Bright Lady and later a haunting lament, as well as traditional singer Maighread Ni Dhomhnaill.

Marian's close friend and RTE colleague Clare Duignan gave the second reading and members of the family and close friends gave prayers of the faithful, including Georgia Clarke, Rory Clarke, Jude Clarke, Joanne Hassett O’Kelly and Paul Colgan.

Marian's cherished son Jack was due to give the eulogy for his beloved mother at the end of the service.

In his homily Monsignor Ciaran O’ Carroll said the sad news of the death of Marian came as a dreadful shock.

He said: "She was such an icon of Irish broadcasting and will always be remembered for her outstanding journalistic abilities, her keen intellect, warmth, wit, thoughtfulness, compassion and kindness.

”The contribution Marian made to advancing and shaping our nation and its peoples through her professional work as a courageous broadcaster, and her determination to facilitate conversation without fear or favour, was repeatedly and wonderfully captured in countless public tributes paid over recent days."
