Hundreds are tested for covid at Bishopton centre as case numbers spike

Hundreds of people turned out to be tested for Covid-19 in Bishopton last week as cases in Renfrewshire peaked at an all-time high.

A total of 406 people were tested at the temporary facility set up at Bishopton Community Centre.

Aimed at asymptomatic people who live, work or attend school in Bishopton, the testing site closed on Tuesday after a week-long operation.

It used lateral flow testing kits - which return results within 45 minutes - in a bid to identify people who did not have symptoms of the virus but who may unknowingly have been passing it to others.

It found three positive cases who were then able to self-isolate and help stop the spread of the virus.

The site was run and staffed by Renfrewshire Council as part of the national rollout of community testing centres and follows successful deployment of temporary Covid-19 test sites in Linwood, Cochrane Castle, Renfrew, Ferguslie and Johnstone.

Renfrewshire Council leader Iain Nicolson (Renfrewshire Council)

Renfrewshire Council leader Iain Nicolson said: “I would like to thank everyone who came along to the mobile testing site at Bishopton Community Centre.

“Community testing and identifying people who may have Covid-19 is an important part of ensuring we stop the spread of the virus, and it was encouraging to see so many people turn out to play their part.

“Please continue to get tested either at the community testing sites when available, ordering or collecting free Covid-19 home tests and, most importantly, getting your vaccine when it is offered.”

The Bishopton figures come as Renfrewshire continues to record soaring numbers of new covid cases.

In the last week of August, a staggering 1,900 people returned a positive result for the virus.
